2022 Lake Como

After the dreadful COVID-19 outbreak and the devastating impact on families and the economies of the world, we are happy that we now see new shoots of travel and Lake Como is a place not to be missed in any lifetime.

Weddings
2022 will definitely see many weddings taking place. Our sister lake Como villa website has some information and some fabulous villas to rent this year. This site has a very extensive collection too. We have seen many celebrities over the years but this is one of the most romantic spots in the world to be wed!

Car Shows
In 2022 some of the world’s most spectacular automobiles will go out for a spin for the first time along public roads. The tours will likely start off from the Hotel Villa d’Este in the mornings of May. The routes generally run along the Lakeside and then take to the hills. Two days later  the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will start and this customary parade of valuable cars is loved by thousands of enthusiasts will be open to the public.

Fireworks
Each year the Lake Como Fireworks have an unbelievable display of fireworks for such a quiet and beautiful location. The display from Isola Comacina is not to be missed. The display is known as and part of the Festival of San Giovanni. Normally the event is held on at the end of June or early July.

Through music and storytelling, the origins of the event are explained, when after a historic battle of the island in 1169 ended with the island being set on fire. Every year since the fireworks display is a representation of the burning of the island.

The events are held the weekend closest to Saint John’s Day. The origin of the name of the festival of ‘lumaghitt’ is based on an ancient legend, wherein the locals were able to rid themselves of wild June hail storms which destroyed the harvests by imploring the aid of Saint John the Baptist and make a solemn procession by boat to Comacina, where there was a small church dedicated to the saint. After this modest pilgrimage the storms ceased and consequently, the procession is repeated every year with the floating illuminations.

Traditional fare for the occasion is polenta and snails and as a result, someone decided to use the empty shells of molluscs as wick candle holders, to be cast across the lake, hence ‘lumaghitt.’ Today village folk even revert to wearing a period costume for the occasion and, later in the day, Holy Mass is respectfully conducted in memory, among the ruins of the ancient basilica of Santa Eufemia.
